Calling All Iowans!!!

Monday, February 18th is Iowa Humane Lobby Day.

This is an event that takes place every year at the Iowa State Capital (1007 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA  50319).

What is Iowa Humane Lobby Day??

Basically, this is your chance to become a Lobbyist.  You’ve all heard about the Lobbyists in federal government and how they are responsible for influencing our Federal Legislators and the laws that are passed.  Well here is your chance to make a difference and have your voice heard.  You can become a lobbyist for animal rights.  Join us at the Iowa State Capital on Monday, February 18th and make your voice heard.

If you are like me, you hear horror stories of animals raised in horrendous conditions and just didn’t think there was anything you could do.  This is where you are wrong and this day will give you your chance to make a difference.  A few years ago, one of Iowa’s state legislators was trying to get dogs categorized as livestock, meaning they could be raised for food, fiber, and labor.  This would have been a terrible tragedy for dogs as this would have given commercial breeders free reign in how they raise and breed dogs.  Humane treatment for livestock is much different than humane treatment for companion animals.  It was because of this proposal that I first went to the state capital to lobby for animal rights and We Did Make A Difference!!  Because of our efforts this proposal failed.

A group we are associated with called Iowa Voters for Companion Animals will be there from Noon to 3pm to assist voters in speaking to their state legislators about the problems with Iowa Puppy Mills.  They can tell you what the current issues are and give you talking points to share with your legislators.  This group is concerned with the welfare of companion animals and wish to promote laws to protect them.  They are also working to make sure those laws are enforced.

The ARL, IFHS, ASPCA and HSUS will also have representatives available for you to speak with.  They can educate you on the current issues so that you can then educate your legislator.  If you have ever wanted to make a difference…this is your chance.

Be Well & Be Happy,
Pet~Pourri
