Westminster Day 2

Well…I’m a day late with the Day 2 results of Westminster.  Sorry about that everyone.  I got swamped at work.  Valentine’s Day and I work in Customer Care.  J

So Day 2 at the 137th WestminsterKennel Club Dog Show featured the Sporting Group, the Working Group, the Terrier Group, and Best in Show.  (Click Here to see my report on the first day of Westminster)

The Sporting Group includes the following breeds:

SPORTING

And the winner of the Sporting Group was GCH Mt View’s Ripsnortersilvercharm (say that three times really fast).  He is a German Wirehaired Pointer.  I just love their beards.  He is quite the handsome young man.  Clickhere to see who placed in the top four.

The Working Group includes the following breeds:

WORKING

And the winner of the Working Group was GCH Claircreek Impression De Matisse.  He is a Portuguese Water Dog.  This is the same breed that President Obama’s family has.  This young man doesn’t have the white that Beau does, but he is a beauty.  Love the haircut. Clickhere to see who placed in the top four.

The Terrier Group includes the following breeds:

TERRIER

The winner for the Terrier Group was GCH Slyfox Sneak’s A Peek.  He is a Smooth Fox Terrier.  The Smooth refers to his coat.  There is also a Wire coated Fox Terrier.  You can see he is full of mischief.  J  Clickhere to see who placed in the top four.

Now that all the winners for each group have been named, it is time for Best in Show.  Of the 2,721 entries into this years dog show, it has been narrowed down to these seven dogs.

1.      The American Foxhound for the Hound Group, and the only female in the final seven…CH Kiarry’s Pandora’s Box.

2.      The Affenpinscher for the Toy Group…GCH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari.

3.      The Bichons Frises for the Non-Sporting Group…GCH Vogelflight’s Honor To Pillowtalk.

4.      The Old English Sheepdog for the Herding Group…Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect.

5.      The German Wirehaired Pointer for the Sporting Group… GCH Mt View’s Ripsnortersilvercharm.

6.      The Portuguese Water Dog for the Working Group… GCH Claircreek Impression De Matisse.

7.      The Smooth Fox Terrier for the Terrier Group…GCH Slyfox Sneak’s A Peek.

Hereis an interested chart I found on the Westminster Kennel Club website.  It shows the breeds that won each group throughout the years. All the way back to 1924.

So…are you ready to shoot me yet?  Dying to know who was Best in Show??  Click here to see a video of the judging.  This is the big event.  Each dog is lead into a dark arena individually under the spotlights focusing just on them while the announcer tells the audience about each dog.  It’s quite the event and really builds up the suspense.  It takes a good 5 minutes for all the dogs to enter the arena.  They go from largest to smallest.  The little dogs always get the most attention, or so it seems to me.

And now the lights come up and you can see all the dogs and the judge enters the ring.  He walks up and down the line looking at each dog from across the ring.  Then he goes up to the first dog and walks down the line looking at each dog close up.  He then asks all the handlers to run the dogs around the ring.  He wants to see how each dog moves.  And then he pulls the first dog up for a closer examination.  He looks at their eyes, their teeth, feels the shape of their head and then runs his hands down the dog feeling his muscle tone and bone structure.  He then has the dog run down the ring and then back toward him watching how they move.  What is he thinking as he watches no one knows.  He then has the dog run around the ring back to his spot and then goes on to examine the next dog.

Finally after they are all back in place he looks up and down the line slowly.  Then he has each run around the ring again.  Once they are all back in position he again starts at the first dog and walks down the line looking at each dog.  He pauses by each.  And now the suspense really begins.  He again looks at the dogs and then walks over to the judges table to write down his decision.  You can feel how tense each handler is waiting on pins and needles.  Then the judge and his assistance take the ribbon and trophies and approach the finalists.  The judge thanks all the handlers and exclaims how wonderful a specimen each dog is for their group.  First he announces the 2nd place (Reserve) winner.  The Old English Sheepdog.  And finally…he calls out to the handler for the…
